MOTM Interview By: Kim (Hankums)
Tell us about yourself, your life, and everyone important to you ,and what work and hobbies do you have?
Well I grew up on a small farm in the Northern California Foothills. We had every kind of farm animal there was to have. During the summer I rode my horse from sun up to sundown and only because I had to be home before the sun went down! Otherwise, I probley never would have come home all summer. I wanted to be a Mountain woMan. I met my husband working at McDonald's but, we didn't get together until 15yrs later.
I got my BS in Business and went to the Corporate Jungle and became a workaholic. We decided for our 1st yr anniversary to move from the cement jungle to the Mountains of Lake Tahoe. Nine years later we find ourselves transferring to Vegas for the very jobs we started out in Tahoe. Leaving behind our beloved Sailboat “Air Waves” to make some good money for retirement to return to the Lake.
I now find myself in my 40's and trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up! So we decided it's time to have furkids!!!! Yahooo.. Enter in Madison and then we were blessed with Sierra, too. I love being a furmom.
Right now I have hopes for this new clothing company that I have been volunteering my “skills”. It's called Freedom for Wild Horses ( www.freedomforwildhorses.com in case you wanna check it out). Proceeds of the clothing sales go to help the Wild Horse Sanctuaries. My goal is to get the clothing in enough stores so they will be able to hire me! And I can work from home and still do my favorite job being a furmom.
Horror movies or Comedy???
That's a hard one. I love them all.. We have a ton of Stephen King movies so I guess horror over comedy. But, give me a good chic flick that makes me cry and laugh I am in movie heaven!!
What's the first thing you do in the morning, what's the last thing at night?
HaHa wake up to a Mastiff in my face taking my breath away! Let girls out to pee!
Take girls out for early morning walk. Last thing at night... Log on to MOC and Post WINNER on “Last one to Post”
Best place you have ever eaten at?
The Nine at the Palms (LV). They have the best Filet Mignon and the sides come in dishes so you can share with everybody at the table. The Creamed Corn is sooo good, too!
What made you decide to invite a Mastiff into your life?
I have dog sat a lot of dogs. I would even do it for free just to have a dog in my life. I couldn't have my own because I traveled a lot with work. While living in Lake Tahoe my boss got a new puppy an English Mastiff. I fell in LOVE the first time I met Abigail (Abby). Of course I volunteered my dog sitting services! We had her in our home for a month once while her family was on big job in San Francisco.
I was hooked on having a Mastiff ever since! That is Abby in my pictures. I got to take her to work with me every time I had her.
How did you get involved with hiking with the big dogs?
After getting laid off, I took Madison hiking to Red Rock almost everyday.. it's kinda boring by yourself all the time. So I searched on the internet big dogs and what to do in Vegas. Meetup.com had a hiking group for big dogs. I have been hooked ever since. They are a really fun group of people and dogs. Anndd they don't mind a little slobber!
We love to hear funny/cute stories about what our Mastiffs do….do you have any stories to share with us?
That would be Sierra! She will not let me sleep in. If anybody is awake including Madison, I have to be awake, too! She nose butts me, body slams the bed, and just recently Madison jumps on the bed for cuddle time after Daddy goes to work. But, Sierra doesn't like it and noses me awake! And jumps halfway on the bed.. Get up Mom and Madison. I wonder if she learns to jump up and cuddle if I could get another hour!
What has been the most helpful advice or tip someone shared with you about caring for a Mastiff?
Take a deep breath, research, and be patient! Nothing happens overnight with these Gentle Giants! And most important share on MOC what is happening with your Mastiff. You will learn soo much.
As a Mastiff owner, what is the most embarrassing thing you've had to do for your girls?
Besides picking up poop bigger than your hand in public! I would have to bring it back to Madison, our first Big Dog Hike.. The Slobber! This lady with her non slobber dog was giving her dog some water.. I have no clue how it happen but.. Madison gave her a slobber necklace full of dirt. I was trying so hard to clean this lady up.. and in the excitement Madison slimmed her legs too! I was mortified, everybody was looking and laughing. Needless to say I have never seen that lady or her dog again. And most of the group slapped me on the back and said don't worry she didn't belong here anyway! But, still Madison slimmed her really good!
What are your favorite things about Madison and Sierra?
Ohhh Gosh! Everything... But, I have to say my most favorite is the love they give me. I have never met a more loving breed than the Mastiff. Madison and Sierra make me feel like their whole world revolves around their family (well except Niki the kitty! We are still working on loving the kitty) You may have issues outside your home but, inside they are the most wonderful furkids ever.
How did you learn about MOC, and what is your favorite part of being a member of this forum?
I was just finding out that the computer can be used for social stuff too! I was searching meetup.com for a Mastiff group in Vegas. Found one in PA and one of the members had posted she found this great Mastiff group called Mastiff Online Community. So I checked it out and thought everybody seems nice and they share LOTS of PICTURES of their sweet babies. And I wanted to share Madison too! I was nervous though, because I have never been on a forum before.
My favorite part about being a member is the support everybody gives you. It feels like a large group of people that will laugh, cry, worry and offer all their knowledge to be with you through anything you encounter.
And I can't forget Last one to Post!! I don't know why but I just love that game!
Are there any members that you've met from our mastiff community, and if so describe the meeting to us.
I have come “this” close to meeting two members. Shawna (havensbane) but, between “Let's Make a Deal” and the NFR (I was working a booth too) we didn't get to meet. And Beth (msbab) but, the plans got canceled there too!
I don't think Kat (janeofthejungle) won't be able to stay away from Vegas hiking this spring though!
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and how would you like to get there?
I would love to Sail around the world. There is nothing better than being on a Sailboat. But, it would have to be a big one for around the world with two Mastiffs!! Cuz I wouldn't last a day without my girls!
Any comment or advice you would like to give to members or staff…please feel free to elaborate here.
I really have no comments for the staff.. they are just wonderful! I would have to say what I like to live by...
- Do to others as you want done to you.
- Just Do It.. What's the worse that can happen you learn something!
